Experience has shown that some form of guided relaxation can be helpful for people with functional dysphonia, especially if practiced regularly. It is, therefore, recommended that clients be given access to an audio file (e.g. CD, downloadable MP3, relaxation app, YouTube link) that they can use on their own at a time and place that suits them. There are many relaxation techniques to choose from, including:
- autogenic training
- mindfulness meditation
- progressive muscle relaxation
- guided imagery
While providing a relaxation audio is optional, it is strongly recommended that clients are encouraged to take time out each day for themselves as ‘relaxation time’. A brief discussion should establish what each client enjoys doing for relaxation and how this helps them.
