An example CA analysis

We will now work through an example analysis of naturally occurring conversation. The aim is to demonstrate how to conduct CA analyses of conversation data by walking through the appropriate methodological steps which would be taken by any conversation analyst. We will break this down into seven steps, as follows.

  1. Transcribe the conversation
  2. Determine the overarching structure
  3. Determine the interactional business
  4. Identify recurrent patterns
  5. Pose research questions
  6. Answer the questions
    1. Who speaks most?
    2. Function of minimal turns?
    3. Respondent role?
  7. Generate theory
